Whitening Shades

When considering teeth whitening, how white should you go? The shade of your teeth is a matter of personal preference, but you want to be careful that you don’t go overboard and inadvertently cause the “white Chicklet” look. Ideally, you want your smile to be bright, yet natural-looking.

At our dental office, we use a white shade chart that demonstrates 17 levels of tooth whiteness. While some whitening procedures can whiten your teeth up to nine shades, more commonly a change of two to three shades is preferable and still makes a significant difference.

The four basic shade ranges for teeth are:

Reddish brown (five levels)

Reddish yellow (four levels)

Gray (four levels)

Reddish gray (four levels)

It’s important to note, also, that not all of your teeth are necessarily the same color. For example, eye teeth tend to be darker, while front teeth are usually the whitest. Bear in mind, too, that whitening can’t change the color of metal fillings or metal crowns.

With laser teeth whitening (Zoom whitening), in just one dental visit, your teeth can become significantly whiter – based on your preference and your our recommendation. With home teeth whitening kits, you can use the trays repeatedly until you reach whitening shade that you desire.
